Past Planning: The Wheel

How the Wheel would have looked if placed behind the Art Gallery

The Wheel at the National Railway Museum, York
In November 2005 World Tourist Attractions negotiated a three-year lease with the National Railway Museum, to house a wheel on their site and an application for planning permission was granted. At the end of the three years the owners removed the structure.

New locations were considered by another company, which included North Street Gardens and St George's Field, but these were rejected on environmental grounds.

A proposal to place the 53 metre high ferris wheel on unused space behind the York Art Gallery was strongly criticised by 75 organisations and individuals. The proposal went on hold in late May 2011 until a bat survey had been carried out, which did find bats. The Art Gallery from February 2013 begins a major refurbishment of the space, including a new garden behind the Gallery.

In the event the Wheel was successfully installed for several seasons in the gardens of the Royal York Hotel.

There is currently no Wheel in York.
