Winter Social – Lost Houses of Yorkshire
December 5 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pmFree - £12
Once again we gather for a festive celebration at Knavesmire Lodge by kind permission of Past-President, Darrell Buttery. Our guest speaker this year will be Edward Waterson, familiar to members for his excellent Sheldon lecture on Walter Brierley. Of nearly two thousand English country houses that have disappeared since the 1850s, no county lost more than Yorkshire. Edward will be exploring the reasons for the destruction of so many architectural masterpieces, among them Newington Hall, the Greek revival mansion that was previously home to his own family. There will also be ample opportunity to mingle with fellow members over mulled wine and mince pies and to browse the popular antiques stall for one or two unusual Christmas gifts.
Meet at Knavesmire Lodge, 304 Tadcaster Road YO24 1HE. Parking is available near the bottom of Nelson’s Lane. Buses 4,12,13,13A and 843 all stop at Chalfonts, near the house.
Cost: 12 (including seasonal refreshments)
