Event Navigation

Quaker Businessman, philanthropist, newspaper proprietor, director of the Rowntree New Earswick Village, Reform and Charitable trusts and of the Retreat Hospital , Arnold Rowntree devoted much of his life to improving the lives of the population of the City of York in the first half of the twentieth century. He was able to put into practice in York and further afield many of the reforms suggested by his cousin Benjamin Seebohm Rowntree. A very engaging character and a staunch Quaker, he faced some of the greatest challenges of his life when he was Liberal M.P. for York during the First World War and had to try to reconcile politics with principle. This lecture will be given by Sarah Shields, and is organised by the Sheldon Memorial Trust. The lecture will be followed by wine and soft drinks in the Undercroft.
