York Civic Trust was approached early in 2018 to restore a tombstone that had fallen into disrepair by Virgin Trains East Coast (now LNER). The tombstone is situated in Bishophill Community Garden and marks the grave of Thomas Gowland, a railwayman who was killed at the age of 24 in an early train collision, which happened near Burton Salmon in 1851.

The tombstone was up-righted and repaired with the assistance of Mason Clark Associates and I.M.Thornton Building Developments. The project was managed by Nick Beilby, on behalf of York Civic Trust.

Our contractors were assisted on the day by this local resident.
