St Denys Church Tour
November 13 @ 11:00 am - 1:00 pmFree – £10.00
Due to popular demand, we have organised a second visit this year to St Denys.
The church of St. Denys, Walmgate, is first recorded in about 1160 but is built on the foundations of two earlier structures, an Anglo-Saxon church and a Roman building. Under the patronage of the Percy family, Earls of Northumberland, the church reached its peak of size and splendour in the late mediaeval period. Much of its famous collection of stained glass dates from that time. Later it suffered troubles and calamities, was reduced in size, and substantially re-modelled in 1846-7. The endangered north aisle was restored in 2017-18, financed by the Heritage Lottery Fund and other generous donors.
We will be guided around the church by the church warden, Dr Charles Kightly.
Meet at the church entrance, YO1 9QD.
