SUMMARY:Magistrates in the Community
DESCRIPTION:Do you wonder what happens in the Magistrates’ Court? This event will help demystify the legal system\, explain how guilt or innocence is decided and how sentences are reached. Local magistrates offer a presentation about their work in court –“ sittings” -and invite participation. \nLocal magistrates Brian Watt JP and Chris Tolley JP will host the presentation in Fairfax House\, part of the Magistrates in the Community initiative by the Magistrates Association to open up court processes. Teams of volunteer magistrates across the UK aim to engage with audiences such as schools\, colleges\, community groups and social groups. The aim is to educate the wider community about the work of their local court. \nThe event is tailored to suit different audiences\, and can involve an interactive mock trial; commonly heard cases in the Court; how verdicts are reached; how sentences are decided\, using the now-famous Sentencing Guidelines; how magistrates are appointed; what is their role or the lawyers role; what is topical.\nThis will be an opportunity to ask questions and to participate. \nCastlegate Hub\, Fairfax House

SUMMARY:Sheldon Lecture: George Pace CVO
DESCRIPTION:George Pace was the country’s most prolific church architect in the post war period. He designed new churches\, restored cathedrals and re-ordered hundreds of parish churches including locally St. Martin le Grand. \nHe had an exceptional knowledge of mediaeval architecture\, but was a modernist designing in concrete and steel using Yorkshire craftsmen to make a church an act of worship in itself. He worked in the tradition of the great Victorian architects designing everything down to the light fittings and door handles. The lecture will be given by Peter Pace and will be followed by drinks in the undercroft.\nVenue: Merchant Adventurers’ Hall

SUMMARY:Nestle Today Lecture - event now open to the public
DESCRIPTION:York is home to a major production and research site of one of the world’s biggest multi-national companies. Nestle is also the largest private employer in our city. \nWe are surrounded by the legacy of Nestle’s predecessor\, and this sometimes distracts from the contribution that Nestle makes to the local economy today. \nAt a time when multi-nationals are so much under the microscope Peter Clinker\, Estates and Facilities Manager of Nestle UK will talk both on the company’s achievements and some of the challenges that a leading confectionery production\, marketing and research centre faces in today’s world. \nLecture Venue: Friargate Meeting House\, Castlegate\, York YO1 9RN \nEVENT NOW OPEN TO THE PUBLIC – TICKETS ARE NON REFUNDABLE

SUMMARY:Anglo - Scandinavian York Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Written sources tell us that the Vikings destroyed York in 866/7\, and yet by the 10thcentury Jorvik was a thriving town with far-reaching connections. \nArchaeological discoveries in York have retrieved   a rich store of evidence from the city’s waterlogged soils\, helping us to understand the extent and character of the Anglo-Scandinavian city. \nDr Ailsa Mainman will explore streets\, churches and lost graveyards as we trace a route back to these vibrant times when two cultures – Anglo-Saxon and Scandinavian – merged to create a city well worth capture by William of Normandy. \nMeet at Fairfax House\, Castlegate\, YO1 9RN \nYCT MEMBERS ONLY EVENT – TICKETS ARE NON REFUNDABLE

SUMMARY:Pocklington School Visit
DESCRIPTION:Pocklington School celebrated its quincentenary in 2014. It has been on the same site ever since it was founded and its links with York are strong. For centuries the Minster Chancellor\, Dean and the Archbishop were involved with its administration. York architects\, including Walter Brierley\, were used. \nA notable Victorian Headmaster was keen on buying architectural salvage to use in the many buildings he erected and thus there is a fine fireplace by John Carr in one of the boys’ boarding houses\, and material from the Earl of Burlington’s Londesborough Hall\, bought from George Hudson. The tour is led by Darrell Buttery. \nMeet:  Park behind the front of the school\, reached by a drive on the right of the main school buildings. Buses from York stop outside the school. SUMMARY:"Hungate - The First 2000 Years" Peter Connelly Lecture
DESCRIPTION:The archaeology of Hungate\, York has provided evidence for at least 2000 years of continuous human connection to this low lying parcel of land nestled in the Foss valley. \nDuring his talk Peter will trace these connections from the use of the area as a Roman cemetery on the edge of Eboracum\, through the organised development on the fringes of Viking Age Jorvik and onwards across time to the start of the 20th century when Hungate was called home by a large working class community. \nBy illustrating the perspective of the last 2000 years\, Peter will reveal how certain choices in the past have influenced the development of the Hungate\, we see today. He will finish his talk with a personal view of how contemporary decisions\, may influence the development of Hungate in the future. \nLecture Venue: Friargate Meeting House\, Castlegate\, York YO1 9RN \n  \nNON-YCT MEMBERS ALSO WELCOME  – TICKETS ARE NON REFUNDABLE

SUMMARY:Sheldon Lecture Eric Milner-White
DESCRIPTION:‘Beyond carols and stained glass’ \nEric Milner-White\, churchman\, civic leader and connoisseur\, 1884-1963 \nEric Milner-White was Dean of York from 1941 until his death in 1963\, having previously been Dean of King’s College\, Cambridge.  Today he is best known for his moulding of the modern Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols and for his controversial reordering of the  medieval glass in York Minster. \nHis career as a working class priest\, chaplain during the First World War\, churchman\, educationalist and collector are now largely forgotten. Sixty plus years after his death\, his life\, achievements and reputation are worth revisiting as those of a ‘Remarkable Dean’. This lecture will be given by Dr Allen Warren and will be followed by wine and soft drinks in the Undercroft. \n Venue: Merchant Adventurers’ Hall\, Fossgate\, York YO1 9XD \nYCT MEMBERS ONLY EVENT – TICKETS ARE NON REFUNDABLE

SUMMARY:"York's First Photographs": Exhibition Guided Walk
DESCRIPTION:In 1844\, when photography was an exciting new phenomenon\, David Octavius Hill and Robert Adamson came down to York from their studio in Edinburgh to photograph delegates attending the meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science. The conference was centred on the Yorkshire Museum and Museum Gardens\, where Hill and Adamson set up their equipment against the ruins of St Mary’s Abbey. The photographs they took are the earliest known to have been taken in York. \nTo celebrate the 175th anniversary of this event\, the Yorkshire Philosophical Society [YPS] has joined with York Museums Trust and York Explore to stage an outdoor exhibition of twelve of the surviving portraits. They form a trail of large weather-proof copies around the gardens and by the lawn next to the library. The exhibition runs until 4 November. \nThey include nationally famous scientists\, as well as people of importance to York and the YPS which hosted the 1844 meeting. \nBob Hale\, YPS archivist and a member of the exhibition project team\, will lead a guided walk adding further detail to the stories of those who were photographed – some colourful\, some aristocratic\, some of humble origins\, who all accepted the chance to be recorded for posterity \nMeet at 2.30pm at the YPS (Yorkshire Philosophical Society) Lodge to the gardens on Museum Street. \nPlease wear suitable footwear for this outdoor event. \nHenry Baines\, superintendent of Museum Gardens\nFor a detailed overview of the exhibition and the research behind it\, please visit the YPS’s dedicated webpage for it. \n\nYCT MEMBERS ONLY EVENT – TICKETS ARE NON-REFUNDABLE

SUMMARY:St Denys Church Tour
DESCRIPTION:Due to popular demand\, we have organised a second visit this year to St Denys. \nThe church of St. Denys\, Walmgate\, is first recorded in about 1160 but is built on the foundations of two earlier structures\, an Anglo-Saxon church and a Roman building. Under the patronage of the Percy family\, Earls of Northumberland\, the church reached its peak of size and splendour in the late mediaeval period.  Much of its famous collection of stained glass dates from that time. Later it suffered troubles and calamities\, was reduced in size\, and substantially re-modelled in 1846-7. The endangered north aisle was restored in 2017-18\, financed by the Heritage Lottery Fund and other generous donors. \nWe will be guided around the church by the church warden\, Dr Charles Kightly. \nMeet at the church entrance\, YO1 9QD. \nYCT MEMBERS ONLY EVENT – TICKETS ARE NOT REFUNDABLE \nThis event has now sold out.  Please contact York Civic Trust on 01904 655543 or email Events@yorkcivictrust.co.uk to be added to a waiting list should any tickets be returned or if the Trust is able to arrange an additional event.
