SUMMARY:FAMOUS PEOPLE OF NORTH STREET AND SKELDERGATE
DESCRIPTION:This year Darrell Buttery concentrates on North Street and Skeldergate in his ‘famous people’ walking tours. Whilst backwaters now and little visited\, this has not always been the case. With access to the river both streets saw much activity in earlier centuries and some grand houses were built\, including John Carr’s own. \nSome good buildings still survive but much was demolished after the war. However\, not surprisingly some famous names are associated with this area and the church of All Saints\, North Street\, is one of the finest in the city. \nMeet in All Saints Church\, North Street. \nYCT MEMBERS ONLY EVENT

SUMMARY:YORK CASTLE GATEWAY WALKING TOUR
DESCRIPTION:The area around the former York Castle is the most prominent public space in England’s second city\, and has been badly used and under-developed for three generations since the Victorian prison and castle walls were demolished. \nThe City of York Council is trying to remedy this by consulting all interested parties\, and commissioning a Master Plan for the area.  Early actions are already under way\, such as the displacement of the Clifford’s Tower car park to a new location in St George’s Fields. \nWe will hear from Andy Kerr\, Project Manager\, on the challenges facing the Master Plan and its implementation\, and will then visit places of current interest in the area. \nMeet at Friends’ Meeting House\, Lower Friargate\, York YO1 9RL at 10am\, and be prepared for a walking tour lasting about an hour.   \nYCT MEMBERS ONLY EVENT \nThis event has SOLD OUT\, a waiting list has opened\, please contact info@yorkcivictrust.co.uk to be placed on the reserve list.

SUMMARY:ST DENYS CHURCH TOUR
DESCRIPTION:The church of St. Denys\, Walmgate\, is first recorded in about 1160 but is built on the foundations of two earlier structures\, an Anglo-Saxon church and a Roman building. Under the patronage of the Percy family\, Earls of Northumberland\, the church reached its peak of size and splendour in the late mediaeval period. Much of its famous collection of stained glass dates from that time. Later it suffered troubles and calamities\, was reduced in size\, and substantially remodelled in 1846-7. The endangered north aisle was restored in 2017-18\, financed by the Heritage Lottery Fund and other generous donors. We will be guided around the church by the church warden\, Dr Charles Kightly. \nMeet at the church entrance \nYCT MEMBERS ONLY EVENT \nTHIS EVENT IS SOLD OUT  – PLEASE CONTACT THE OFFICE TO BE PLACED ON A WAITING LIST  Contact:  accounts@yorkcivictrust.co.uk

SUMMARY:Wentworth Woodhouse the Miracle of its Survival
DESCRIPTION:Thursday 15 November (6.15pm – 8.15pm) \nVenue: Friends’ Meeting House\, Friargate\, York\, YO1 9RL \nPeter Brown has made an in-depth study of Earl Fitzwilliam’s Wentworth Woodhouse. Furniture specifically designed and commissioned from the leading firms of the day\, a unique group of sculpture\, some of which is still in situ\, but the rest distributed around the world (the Getty in LA\, alone\, has 9 pieces from the collection). The collection includes silver from the most famous makers\, and a superb collection of English paintings\, notably by Van Dyck\, Sir Joshua Reynolds and Stubbs. \nUsing the family papers\, now held at Sheffield Archive\, plus drawings from Lord Burlington’s practice and those by James ‘Athenian’ Stuart\, this illustrated talk looks to reimagine\, with the assistance of early Country Life photographs\, owners and curators\, the splendour of this spectacular house. \nPeter’s talk celebrates the rescue of this important mansion and shows how the house appeared prior to its abandonment in the mid-twentieth century\, and the dispersal of the collections. \nTickets are non-refundable.

SUMMARY:Changing Faces: Changing Fortunes: Fossgate and Walmgate
DESCRIPTION:Sunday 28 October (10.30am – 12 noon) \nMeet: inside Walmgate Bar at 10.30am \nDr Peter Gouldsborough\, of the University of York and a member of the Trust’s Planning Committee\, will lead this walking tour\, in which the story of Fossgate and Walmgate will be told through the people and the buildings which have shaped its history.  Fossgate and Walmgate was one of four routes into the Roman City of Eboracum\, this via its south-east gateway\, the Porta principalis sinistra which was situated in present-day King’s Square. \nThis story is not just about deprivation and disease\, it is just as much about philanthropy\, commerce\, improvement and shifting populations\, all of which have helped to change the face of these two streets —this route – and its fortunes. \nTickets are non-refundable. \nTHIS EVENT IS SOLD OUT – IF YOU WISH TO BE PLACED ON A WAITING LIST click info@yorkcivictrust.co.uk

SUMMARY:Pontefract Civic Society
DESCRIPTION:Visit Pontefract for a walking tour with members of Pontefract Civic Society. \nPontefract has a rich heritage\, and in medieval times was regarded as being the third most important settlement in Yorkshire\, behind York and Beverley. Pontefract Castle was regarded by King Edward I as being the Key to the North\, and it remained a royalist stronghold until the three separate periods of siege during the English Civic War. Today’s main town centre is still based on the medieval street pattern\, though with some buildings of the Georgian\, Victorian and Edwardian periods\, plus more modern infill. Our visit will meander through the streets\, highlighting buildings of architectural and social interest. A short diversion will allow us to walk through Friarwood Valley Gardens (a town centre public space)\, and permission is being sought to access Pontefract Town Hall\, which will help to explain the connection to Nelson’s Column! \nMeet outside Pontefract Museum (5 Salter Row\, Pontefract WF8 1BA).  Park in the Pay and Display car park between Stuart Road and Tesco which allows 4 hours parking for £1.70. \nCost £10  \n
