SUMMARY:Changing faces; changing fortunes: Fossgate and Walmgate
DESCRIPTION:Dr Peter Gouldsborough\, of the University of York and a member of the Trust’s Planning Committee\, will lead this walking tour\, in which the story of Fossgate and Walmgate will be told through the people and the buildings which have shaped its history.  Fossgate and Walmgate was one of four routes into the Roman City of Eboracum\, this via its south-east gateway\, the Porta principalis sinisra which was situated in present-day King’s Square. \nOnly in the medieval period did any coherent urban form begin to emerge along this route; however\, disease\, deprivation and squalour seemed to have been rife at this time; York had six hospitals during this period and even in the 1800s there were three hospitals on these two streets alone.   But this story is not just about deprivation and disease\, it is just as much about philanthropy\, commerce\, improvement and shifting populations\, all of which have helped to change the face of these two streets – this route – and its fortunes.  Only in the late-twentieth and twenty-first centuries have fortunes really turned\, to produce the vibrant economy and diversity we see in the face\, and in the faces\, of this part of the modern city of York. \nMeet inside Walmgate Bar at 10.30am \nWalk duration 60 to 90 minutes \n Cost £10 \nThis event has SOLD OUT if you would like to be placed on a waiting list\, please email info@yorkcivictrust.co.uk

SUMMARY:York's Forgotten Sculptor: George Walker Milburn (1844-1941)
DESCRIPTION:George Walker Milburn (1844-1941) was one of the most prolific carvers and sculptors of the late 19th century and early 20th century. He worked with most of the major architects of the time. Evidence has been found for over 1500 hundred of his works\, more than 300 of which are extant. Yet\, except for a few works\, he is all but forgotten in his native York. \nIn an illustrated lecture\, Dr. Tony Power\, who has been researching the carver for over 6 years\, with exclusive access to his ledgers\, will attempt to restore Milburn to rightful recognition of his artistry. \nSt Michael Le Belfry Church Hall\, Stonegate \nWe welcome non-members of York Civic Trust to attend this event \nCost £10 \n

SUMMARY:Growing a Garden City – Uxcester and York
DESCRIPTION:David Rudlin was the author of URBED’s blueprint for sustainable urban growth which won the prestigious Wolfson Economics Prize in 2014. Part economic manifesto and part spatial strategy the proposal showed a radical way in which the fictional city of Uxcester could grow and provide an improved environment for its citizens. He said at the time “We believe that the expansion of existing places like Uxcester to create garden cities has the potential to make a significant contribution to meeting our housing needs as well as creating places that are attractive and popular\, and that fulfil their economic potential.” At a time when York is considering its future – and the adoption after many decades of a Local Plan – this should be essential reading\, but better still the fictitious Uxcester is in fact York\, and we have David here to lead us through it and the clear thinking behind it. An illustrated talk and Q&A. There will be refreshments. \nThis event is jointly promoted by York Civic Trust and My Future York. \nFREE event. For tickets click here

SUMMARY:Climax City – Understanding Masterplanning and Urban Growth
DESCRIPTION:David Rudlin of URBED will participate in a guided walk to explore the development of York\, followed by a talk and Q&A looking at the way cities grow. This is based on his forthcoming book Climax city: Masterplanning and the Complexity of Urban Growth which explores the ‘natural’ growth of cities and the way in which this is influenced by masterplanning. The notion is that every place has a ‘climax urbanism’\, just as it has a ‘climax vegetation’ and that throughout history humans have been trying to influence this climax state in the way that they plan cities. It is something that we need to understand if we are to plan effectively today. \nThis event is jointly promoted by York Civic Trust and My Future York. \nFREE event. For tickets click here
