Michael Sturge attended Bootham School in the 1960’s, graduated from Bristol University in 1969, and qualified as a chartered accountant in 1972.  He returned to York in 1980 to take up appointment as the Director of Finance of the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, and was subsequently appointed Deputy Director.  He retired in 2011.

Michael is a past treasurer of the University of York, and past chair of The Pensions Trust for Charities and Voluntary Organisations.  He became a Trustee of the Civic Trust in 2009, and Treasurer in 2012; he also currently chairs the Fairfax House Management Board.  Other charitable interests at present include Trustee of St Leonard’s Hospice, Treasurer of the Yorkshire Arboretum, and Chair of Cober Hill.

When he is not worrying about finances, Michael enjoys being in the Lake District, playing bridge, skiing, and time with family, including 6 grandchildren.
