Victoria Bar Plaque

York Civic Trust repainted the historic plaque above Victoria Bar in September 2018. The plaque is 180 years old and bears the inscription:
‘Victoria Bar – Erected by public subscription under the direction of the City Commissioners – A.D. 1838 – George Hudson Esqre – Lord Mayor’.
Painter Kevin Spencer carried out the restorative works at the instruction of the Trust, painting the plaque in its colours of red and gold.
The road was closed to residents to allow the repainting to take place. The proximity to major roads is a reason why access for the repainting of other plaques at York Walls sites is difficult.
