The demise of the Terry’s chocolate factory in 2004 and subsequent loss of employment in York was keenly felt.

The site has five listed buildings and offers landmark views from across York, but there are large areas available for sensitive development. The new owners, Grantside, sought permission in 2008 for a comprehensive development scheme, but this application was refused by the Council following strong representations from ourselves and the local community.

We welcomed this decision as it gave everyone a chance to return the drawing board. A new application was submitted in February 2010 which took account of the wishes of the neighbouring community and conservation bodies like ourselves; and after a lengthy debate, the Council approved the scheme with a number of conditions.
