Trustee Role: Design Architect/Urban Designer with sensitivity and experience for working in an historic city.

York Civic Trust pro-actively seeks to advise and influence the development of the built environment within the City of York. Since 2010 York has had a resurgence in the property market with large parts of the city centre being purchased by local developers from static landowners. This transfer of ownership and a thriving economic landscape has resulted in a significant increase in ambitious building projects and planning applications.

York Civic Trust, as a non-statutory local consultee with a strong interest in maintaining the significance of the city’s heritage, actively seeks to work with developers and architects to shape the future of the city. Through a partnership with the University of York’s Department of Archaeology’s post-graduate programme of Conservation Studies and Cultural Heritage Management, ‘The Planning Heritage Studio’, the Civic Trust reviews each planning application that comes forward in the city. The casework, alongside the advice and tutoring of the specialist conservation architect expertise provided by York Civic Trust volunteers and staff, provides valuable career development opportunities to those involved.

To complement the Trust’s available conservation knowledge and experience the Board of Trustees are seeking to recruit a design architect or urban designer with experience of working in historic cities who can contribute to strategic discussion and advise colleagues at Board level on standards and qualities of ‘good’ contemporary urban and building design in order, that the strategy, advice and comment of the Civic Trust are derived from best contemporary practice, knowledge and thinking.
