Sustaining the city beautiful: a Programme for York’s city centre in the near future is a new Trust publication which has been sent to all Trust members and is available as a PDF below.
The fully illustrated book describes a programme of work which in the Trust’s view should be taken forward over the next few years to sustain York. It has been written and published with a view to seeking support for the programme among residents, the public and politicians of all parties. Members discussed with author Sir Ron Cooke the programme of work to make York beautiful, and keep it so, in April 2015 in the Friends Meeting House, Friargate, York. Click here for a two-page article about the Trust’s ideas in the York Press of 2 March or here for an article in the Press of 26 February. We hope these are stimulating public discussions about the possible choices for York!
The illustrated PDF contains 24 pages and is 7.5Mb.
Join our teams
We also hope members will wish to join a team of their choice and help take forward a range of projects under the Trust’s City Enhancement Fund. We have a number of volunteers already, and some experts ready to help the projects take shape. But the more help, knowledge and enthusiasm the better!
The first projects which the Trust would like to make progress on are:
- Improving York’s snickelways (eg clutter) and the look of waste disposal sites (eg corrals for bins)
- Enhancing York’s ‘chill out’ open spaces
- Installing a suitable permanent ‘banner’ across Fossgate to celebrate its identity
- Repairing, updating and enhancing the Wayfinder finger posts which point to York’s attractions
- Cleaning up and improving the Rigg monument (seven young people died boating on the Ouse – see this page)
- Gaining commitment and sponsorship to cleaning up the Leeman Road Pedestrian Tunnel
- Installing plaques at important sites – giving information about local history or notable York residents
- Rescuing buildings at risk, such as the eighteenth century Tuke family house on Lawrence Street
