This session introduces free online tools to help you research the history of your local area with step-by-step guidance suitable for all skill levels. We’ll introduce a selection of useful websites and tools that offer a great starting point for discovering local history, places, and stories.

Our Place Heritage Mapping Workshop – South Acomb and Foxwood
Join York Civic Trust for a welcoming, interactive community heritage-mapping session. This workshop invites local residents to come together and explore the heritage of their area. We’ll begin by exploring known heritage assets, such as listed buildings and entries on the local heritage list. From there, participants will be encouraged to share their own memories, experiences, and knowledge, adding meaningful places, stories, and traditions to a large shared map. Whether it’s a favourite street, a hidden corner, or a story connected to a place, your contribution will help build a richer, more inclusive picture of local heritage.
No prior experience is needed, just an interest in the place you live.

Mosaic Workshop
Join York Civic Trust and mosaic artist Lisa-marie Newman from Creative Avenue York for a free, hands-on introduction to mosaic making. You’ll learn basic skills and techniques before creating your own unique artwork inspired by familiar Acomb and Westfield landmarks. Suitable for all levels; all materials provided.

Our Place Walkshop – Acomb’s Hidden History: The Carr
Explore the history and heritage of The Carr area of Acomb. We will take a 90-minute circular walk around The Carr, following Front Street, Carr Lane, Woodlea Bank, Danebury Drive, Fishponds Wood and Beech Grove before returning to the library. Along the way, we will discuss the rich heritage and stories of this part of Acomb.
Please note: the route is around 1.5 miles long and not flat, so may not be suitable for people with restricted mobility.

Through a clear, step-by-step demonstration, you’ll learn how to use websites, archives, maps, and digital tools to uncover stories from your local area.
Suitable for all skill levels, the workshop is relaxed, welcoming, and designed to build confidence. You’re welcome to follow along on your own laptop or smartphone, but it’s equally fine to simply watch, listen, and take notes. Guidance will be available throughout, and all participants will receive a handy guide to the resources covered.

Local Heritage List Workshop
Have you ever wondered why some buildings, landmarks, views, street objects and places are recognised as important parts of York’s heritage? This workshop will introduce York’s Local Heritage List and explain how local people can help identify and celebrate places that matter to their communities.
During the session, we will:
- Explore what the Local Heritage List is and why it is important.
- Discover existing heritage assets from Acomb and Westfield.
- Discuss local places that could be considered for future nominations.
- Learn about the criteria used to assess nominations.
- Find out how to nominate a building, place or feature for inclusion.
- Whether you’re interested in local history, passionate about your neighbourhood, or simply curious about the place you call home, this relaxed and friendly workshop will help you better understand how local heritage is recognised and celebrated.
- No previous knowledge is required, and everyone is welcome.
