Visit Pontefract for a walking tour with members of Pontefract Civic Society.

Pontefract has a rich heritage, and in medieval times was regarded as being the third most important settlement in Yorkshire, behind York and Beverley. Pontefract Castle was regarded by King Edward I as being the Key to the North, and it remained a royalist stronghold until the three separate periods of siege during the English Civic War. Today’s main town centre is still based on the medieval street pattern, though with some buildings of the Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian periods, plus more modern infill. Our visit will meander through the streets, highlighting buildings of architectural and social interest. A short diversion will allow us to walk through Friarwood Valley Gardens (a town centre public space), and permission is being sought to access Pontefract Town Hall, which will help to explain the connection to Nelson’s Column!

Meet outside Pontefract Museum (5 Salter Row, Pontefract WF8 1BA).  Park in the Pay and Display car park between Stuart Road and Tesco which allows 4 hours parking for £1.70.
