This is a special opportunity to see at close quarters and better understand the huge organ in the historic St Michael-le-Belfrey Church, High Petergate, York. The instrument is in the process of being carefully dismantled for a full historical restoration in the Nicholson & Co organ workshops in Malvern, Worcester, before then being installed into the spacious north transept of St Lawrence’s Church, York.
The organ was built in 1885 by the York organ builder, William Denman, and was to be one of the largest instruments of his career. It is housed in a beautifully carved oak case.
The evening will feature a presentation by Andrew Caskie, Managing Director of Nicholson & Co pipe organ specialists, and feature exclusive access to what is one of York’s finest church organs. The occasion of the dismantling of the organ touches on a range of diverse issues, such as conservation theory and best practice, the changing use of organs in churches, and York’s specialist manufacturing history.
The event is free, but reservations are required. Refreshments will be provided.
Donations are welcome on the evening, with all proceeds going to the organ project.
